Data Center Leak Detection

Data Center Leak Detection

In modern computer data centers, hydrocarbon leaks can be a serious concern because they can lead to equipment malfunctions, fires, or other potentially hazardous situations. Data centers are complex environments with a mix of electrical, cooling, and backup systems. Here are areas that are sensitive to hydrocarbon leaks:

Cooling Systems: Many data centers use liquid-based cooling solutions, especially in high-density setups. A leak from these systems can cause electrical short-circuits, corrode equipment, and increase fire risk if the cooling fluid is flammable.

Backup Power Systems: Many data centers, like diesel generators, have backup power solutions to ensure continuity during power outages. A leak from these generators, especially fuel storage tanks or supply lines, can be a fire hazard and pose environmental concerns if the fuel seeps into the ground.

Fire Suppression Systems: Some older data centers might use Halon or other hydrocarbon-based fire suppressants. Accidental discharge or leaks can deplete the ozone layer and contribute to global warming.

Raised Floors: Data centers often have raised floors under which cables, cooling systems, and sometimes even fuel lines for backup generators run. Hydrocarbon leaks in this space can go unnoticed, pose a fire risk, or damage the equipment or cabling underneath.

Air Conditioning and HVAC Systems: Hydrocarbons used as refrigerants can leak from the AC or HVAC systems. While modern refrigerants are often less harmful than older ones, leaks can pose environmental concerns.

Power Distribution Units (PDUs) and Batteries: Some battery technologies, especially older ones, might leak hydrocarbons, damaging nearby equipment and increasing fire risk.

Hydrocarbons can harm the environment if they enter the soil or water systems, impacting the local ecosystem and contaminating drinking water sources. Leaks can also significantly damage the building's structure if they corrode certain materials. It can also compromise the integrity of walls, ceilings, and floors, which is critical for maintaining a controlled environment inside the data center.

Leak detection solutions in data centers are crucial to prevent downtime, equipment damage, and potential safety hazards.

Cable-based leak detection systems, sometimes called rope-type or cable-type leak detectors, are widely utilized in data centers because they cover extensive areas and provide precise leak detection and location.

How They Work:

These systems use specially designed cables that detect the presence of liquid along their length. When any part of the cable comes into contact with a liquid, it causes a change in the cable's resistance, capacitance, or conductivity, depending on the design.  Some advanced systems can even pinpoint the exact location of the leak along the cable, allowing for swift mitigation.

Placement:

Under Raised Floors: Many data centers use raised floors to route cables and sometimes cooling systems. Leaks under these floors can go undetected and cause significant damage. Laying cable-type detectors under the floor ensures early detection.

Perimeter of Rooms: These cables can quickly detect any water entering the room by outlining the room's edges.

Around Equipment: They can be placed around the base of critical equipment, especially water-cooled servers or equipment close to cooling systems.

Along Piping: For data centers that utilize liquid cooling or have extensive plumbing for other reasons, cable detectors are run alongside pipes to detect leaks promptly.

In Overhead Areas: Sometimes, cable trays or overhead systems might leak, primarily if they house cooling pipes. Rope detectors run through these areas for added protection.

Advantages:

Coverage: One of the main advantages is the ability to cover vast areas with a single system.

Precision: Advanced systems can identify the exact location of the leak, allowing for quick response and mitigation.

Flexibility: They can be routed around obstacles, bent around corners, and tailored to fit the specific layout of a data center.

Integration: These systems can often be integrated into the broader environmental monitoring systems of the data center, ensuring centralized monitoring and alerting.

Cable-based leak detection systems effectively protect data centers from the potentially devastating effects of water leaks. Their ability to cover large areas and offer precise detection makes them an invaluable tool in the arsenal of data center management.

Elastomer Absorption Sensing Cables for Hydrocarbon Leak Detection

Elastomer Absorption Sensing Cables for Hydrocarbon Leak Detection

Hydrocarbon leaks threaten the environment and are a concern for public health. Leaks are a significant concern for many industries, such as tank farms, diesel generator installations, fueling depots, and pipelines, as well as organizations such as oil companies and the military.

Polymer Absorption Sensors or Elastomer Absorption Sensors are sensors that can sense oil and gas leaks. These sensors work because the polymers are sensitive to oil and gas molecules. Elastomer Absorption Sensors detect hydrocarbons and other organic compounds at levels that are otherwise undetectable by other means. This type of sensor utilizes a polymer matrix to detect hydrocarbons on the molecular level without requiring complex equipment or precision instruments, such as acoustic sensors or infrared thermography. It is more sensitive than many existing leak detection sensors. Finally, they provide a non-invasive installation and are a relatively inexpensive detection method.

Sensing cables based on elastomer absorption technology are composed of semi-permeable internal conductors shielded by permeable insulation. Escaping hydrocarbon fluids contact the inner semi-permeable elastomer jacket, altering the cable's electrical characteristics and providing a reliable and repeatable signal read by the microprocessor. Along the length of the detection cable, the microprocessor can pinpoint the leak location to within one meter and send relevant information to monitoring systems or operators. The Elastomer Absorption Sensor leak detection cable is wrapped around pipelines, buried underground inside channels, or put in a pipe-in-pipe configuration.

Naftosense - The Trusted Source in Hydrocarbon Leak Detection

Hydrocarbon Leak Detection

Naftosense designs and manufactures hydrocarbon leak detection systems based on addressable products which detect the presence of hydrocarbons such as refined fuel, light / heavy crude oils, lubricants, dielectric oils, solvents, and petrochemical compounds.

Why Naftosense is Ideal for Your Application

Naftosense Leak Detection systems are susceptible to hydrocarbon liquids and gasses. Some customers have baseline contamination in their facilities that cause other leak detection systems to alarm in “normal” operation. Others have problems during periods of excessive rainfall where hydrocarbons are released from the soil, triggering a false alarm. Naftosense solves ALL micro¬exposure alarm issues by allowing real-time volume reporting and field adjustability of the sensor to calibrate for existing conditions.

In addition, the Acquisition Module will report progressive leak alarms as the volume of the leak increases. Sensors are rugged and built to be immersed in a leak environment and still indicate “increasing leak volume” until the sensor becomes completely saturated at full alarm. After remediation, Naftosense sensors can be re-set and re-installed. Only when the sensor is entirely saturated will you need to use our simple cleaning technique involving common household chemicals. Naftosense sensors are reusable with confidence for ten years or more!

Hydrocarbon Storage Leak Detection: Gasoline, Jet Fuel, Diesel, and Oil Tanks

Hydrocarbon Storage Leak Detection

Leaks in hydrocarbon storage tanks may occur via the tank walls or the tank bottom. It is common for an older oil storage tank to have corrosion at its base, emerging from either internal corrodents or external influences such as soil moisture and pH. The addressable sensing cables in the Naftosense hydrocarbon leak detection system offer continuous monitoring and protection for various hydrocarbon storage tanks, aiding in avoiding soil contamination and product loss. The Naftosense hydrocarbon leak detection cable is both fast sensing and reusable.

The cables' underlying technology uses a physical phenomenon that has been around for decades: employing polymeric absorption to detect the presence of compounds in the vapor phase. Polymer-absorption sensors consist of a chemically sensitive absorbent deposited onto a substrate that acts as an electrode. As chemical vapors contact the absorbent, the chemicals absorb into the polymers, causing them to swell. The electrode's resistance varies as swelling occurs, which may be quantitatively measured and recorded. The swelling is proportional to the chemical vapor concentration in contact with the absorbent. PAS technology, which dates back to the 1950s, has a proven track record of identifying the presence of hydrocarbons. The technology works in harsh environments and provides real-time, cost-effective critical infrastructure integrity monitoring.

Naftosense is one of the few leak detection companies in North America capable of tailoring and configuring custom solutions for specific applications. By providing an industry-approved, fully functioning, long-term leak detection system with data communications and location-based warnings, backed by a 10-year guarantee, Naftosense has the real-world knowledge to solve the challenges of the most demanding applications.

Leak Detection for Underground Bulk Storage of Hydrocarbon Products

Leak Detection for Underground Bulk Storage of Hydrocarbon Products

Gasoline, heating oil, and other liquid petroleum products, which make up most of the nation's fuels and energy supply, are frequently held in underground storage tanks or USTs. There are around 553,000 USTs that store petroleum and other hazardous materials in the USA. Leaking can have significant environmental and health consequences, including contamination of groundwater, which is the source of drinking water for over half of the population of the United States.

Corrosion around the base of oil storage tanks is common, resulting in leaks, product loss, and soil pollution. Because early identification of UST system leaks helps stop contamination from spreading from UST locations, the EPA requires UST system owners and operators to detect releases.

All regulated tanks and piping must have release detection, so the discovery of leaks happens fast before contamination spreads from the UST site. An owner must provide their UST system with release detection (often called leak detection). There is no single leak detection technology best for all locations or a single type of leak detection that is consistently the least expensive for USTs. Each method for detecting leaks has its own set of features.

Secondary Containment with Interstitial Monitoring

Secondary containment separates the tank from the rest of the environment. The leak stays between the tank and the barrier, where the leak gets identified. A leak moves towards the interstitial monitor due to the form of the barrier.

Monitors for the Interstitial Space

Monitors used for sensing leaks between the tank and the barrier are interstitial monitors. They warn the operator if a leak is detected.  The physical presence of the leaked product, whether liquid or gaseous, is indicated by several detectors. A measuring stick, placed at the lowest point of the confinement to detect pooled liquid product, is an example of a simple monitor. For critical areas where safety and security are an issue, more sophisticated automated systems are available to check for leaks continuously.

Oil leaks in underground pipelines can be challenging to detect, but hydrocarbon leak detection devices from Naftosense provide an excellent solution. They continuously check for hydrocarbons in various situations. Their unique addressable sensing cabling is IP68 rated, meaning it will continue to function in high water levels and still pinpoint the source of oil leaks.

The Naftosense hydrocarbon leak detection system is perfect for airports and gasoline station storage facilities since it quickly detects and repairs any detected fuel, diesel, or jet fuel leaks. Small-volume hydrocarbon detection in mission-critical applications such as power generator rooms in data centers and other similar locations means you'll be able to detect a leak before any damage occurs, reducing downtime and costs.

Contact Naftosense for any hydrocarbon leak detection applications. Our customer service personnel are available and eager to assist you.
